Soy Isoflavones

Soy isoflavones are phytochemicals (chemicals found in plants) found in soybeans and other legumes. It also known to be a phytoestrogen; a plant chemical that acts similarly as an estrogen found in humans. There are a lot of medical benefits of soy isoflavones. In fact, the soy isoflavones are mostly responsible for the known medicinal benefits of the soybean. A lot of researches have shown that it reduces symptoms caused by menopause. With soy isoflavones breast cancer is less likely to develop. It is also believed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disorders like heart attack.

With regular intake of soy isoflavones men are also less likely to develop prostate cancer. The regular intake and correct doses of soy isoflavones for prostate cancer regulates the risks of acquiring the disease. It is also good for battling osteoporosis and improves bone health. It is believed that the consumption of soy products in Asian countries like China is the reason why cases of osteoporosis are lesser compared to western countries that consume a lot of dairy products.

Now there are also known side effects of soy isoflavones. Although it is known to be very safe, it can cause some allergic reactions with the person taking it. The soy isoflavones side effects may include upset stomach, diarrhea and constipation. It may also decrease normal function of the thyroid glands since it interferes with the amount of iodine absorbed by the body. High intake of this soy isoflavones may also react with anticoagulants like warfarin. The phosphorous and potassium content of soy products are a lot greater than other meat products in the market so there are also high risk of kidney diseases associated with the consumption of these products.

There are a lot of sources where you can get soy isoflavones. There are a lot of soy products in the market and one of the popular is soy milk. The amount of isoflavones in grams in soy milk may vary while the nutrition value is usually available in the package of the product. There is also some soy isoflavones in coffee mate although the concentration is not as good as in other soy products. Currently, soy isoflavones are also available in capsule form that is taken as a dietary supplement.
